◇ After
Flying Eyeball (Jimi Hendrix Experience, Fillmore Auditorium, BG-105) · Rick Griffin, 1968
A single lidless eye with wide feathered wings spread behind it floats over the seated nude, the emblem the whole sheet is built around. It arrives intact, trailing a snake where it used to trail flame.
“After” is the old gallery word for a work made in open conversation with another. It is a lineage, not a shortcut.
