◇ After
Self-Portrait · Vincent van Gogh, 1889
The central panel is the late portrait in flat screenprint colour: swept orange-red hair and beard, hollow cheeks, a pale blue smock with the wide collar. The swirling ground survives the flattening, and the header uses his first name.
“After” is the old gallery word for a work made in open conversation with another. It is a lineage, not a shortcut.
