◇ After
Geronimo (Goyaale), Apache leader - the standard studio bust portrait · Frank A. Rinehart (likely; the canonical Geronimo bust portrait - exact photographer not verified), 1898
The sitter is not the guitarist. Pinched brows over deep-set eyes, the broad flat nose, the hard downturned mouth, black hair parted and cut to the jaw, one hand raised flat at the throat. The blanket across the shoulders is coloured red.
“After” is the old gallery word for a work made in open conversation with another. It is a lineage, not a shortcut.
