◇ After
The Wizard of Oz · MGM (dir. Victor Fleming), after L. Frank Baum, 1939
The cast lines up across the sheet in a new colourway: funnel-hatted Tin Man at left, Scarecrow in a straw hat with a green band, Dorothy in blue, the orange mane at centre. Two feather-winged monkeys come down the right side.
“After” is the old gallery word for a work made in open conversation with another. It is a lineage, not a shortcut.
