◇ After
Black Panther Party honour-guard portraiture (black beret, black leather, shouldered rifle) · Bay Area Black Panther press photography (Stephen Shames / Pirkle Jones circle), 1968
Two bears in black berets and black leather stand at attention either side of a seated white rabbit, slings across the chest, rifles upright at the shoulder. The uniform and the flanking-guard staging come straight from the press photographs.
“After” is the old gallery word for a work made in open conversation with another. It is a lineage, not a shortcut.
