◇ After
Seated presidential portrait of Abraham Lincoln · Mathew Brady studio / Alexander Gardner, 1864
The studio pose is kept whole: seated, torso turned a few degrees, both hands folded low in the lap, the chin-curtain beard. The suit is now a white bunny onesie with pink ears, against orange damask.
“After” is the old gallery word for a work made in open conversation with another. It is a lineage, not a shortcut.
