◇ After

Malcolm X, half-length portrait (hand raised to his face) · Ed Ford, New York World-Telegram & Sun, 1964

The pose is kept intact from the press portrait: head turned slightly, horn-rims, two fingers flat along the temple with the thumb under the jaw. Only the wardrobe changes, studded denim and a star-spangled fingerless glove.

“After” is the old gallery word for a work made in open conversation with another. It is a lineage, not a shortcut.
